Background
Since its establishment, the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) has worked to promote critical thinking, historical understanding, dialogue and a culture of peace and non-violence through its work with children, young people, educators and wider communities. Through its programmes, projects and partnerships, AHDR engages individuals from different ethnic, religious, cultural and social backgrounds and seeks to create spaces for learning, participation, dialogue and cooperation.
Guided by its vision and growing portfolio of projects and activities, AHDR is strengthening its communications capacity to ensure that its work, resources, activities and impact are effectively communicated to relevant audiences in Cyprus and internationally.
The AHDR is seeking a part-time Communications Officer to support the development and implementation of the Association’s communications work. The Officer will work across AHDR projects, activities and organisational communications according to the needs, priorities and work plan of the Association.
Working closely with the AHDR Director and the rest of the AHDR team, the Communications Officer will contribute to the planning and implementation of communications strategies and campaigns; development and management of digital and written content; social media and website management; branding and visual identity; audience and stakeholder engagement; and monitoring and evaluation of communications activities. The Officer will help ensure that AHDR’s communications are clear, accessible, consistent and reflective of the Association’s mission, values and educational approach.
Key Responsibilities
The Communication Officer will contribute to the following areas:
- Communications Strategy, Planning and Procedures
- Develop and implement AHDR’s communications strategy and action plan in consultation with the AHDR Director and relevant members of the AHDR team;
- Develop communications plans and approaches for AHDR projects, activities, campaigns and key organisational priorities;
- Contribute to the development and updating of communications-related procedures, guidelines, templates and standard operating procedures, including guidance on social media and media communications;
- Develop communications-related documentation, including communication plans, timelines, content overviews, reporting and other relevant materials;
- Contribute to the identification and management of communications risks and support the development of appropriate mitigation measures;
- Ensure that communications activities reflect AHDR’s mission, values, educational approach and organisational priorities.
- Content Development and Editorial Management
- Develop, draft, edit and coordinate communications content for AHDR’s projects, programmes and organisational activities;
- Develop content for different formats and audiences, including news items, announcements, press releases, newsletters, social media posts, website content, reports and promotional materials;
- Develop communication campaigns and supporting content for key AHDR projects, events and initiatives;
- Review and edit communications content prepared by Project Officers and other members of the AHDR team, ensuring clarity, consistency and alignment with AHDR’s communications approach;
- Develop and maintain templates and frameworks for recurring communications needs, including press releases, event announcements, social media content and other communication materials;
- Adapt messages and content for different target audiences and communication channels;
- Coordinate with relevant AHDR staff and external contributors, where necessary, for the development, review and publication of communications content.
- Digital, Social Media and Website Management
- Manage AHDR’s social media platforms in coordination with the AHDR team;
- Develop, maintain and monitor the monthly social media content calendar;
- Draft, prepare and publish original social media content, including text, visual and multimedia content;
- Monitor social media engagement and relevant platform insights and identify opportunities for improving reach, engagement and audience interaction;
- Maintain and update the AHDR website, including news, blog, events, resources, reports and other relevant sections;
- Review existing website content and identify areas requiring updating, improvement or further development;
- Ensure that digital content is accurate, accessible, consistent and up to date;
- Support the development and dissemination of digital campaigns and other online communication activities.
- Branding, Visual Identity and Promotional Materials
- Support the consistent implementation and further development of AHDR’s visual identity across communication materials and platforms;
- Ensure that communications and promotional materials are consistent with AHDR’s branding, values and target audiences;
- Develop or coordinate the development of visual materials for social media, websites, events, campaigns and other communications activities;
- Contribute to the design, production and distribution of printed and digital promotional materials;
- Develop and maintain appropriate templates and communication materials for recurring organisational and project needs;
- Ensure that communications materials are prepared and delivered within agreed timelines and in coordination with relevant AHDR staff.
- Audience Engagement, Outreach and Stakeholder Communications
- Support AHDR’s outreach and engagement with relevant audiences, partners, educators, civil society organisations, institutions, media and other stakeholders;
- Contribute to the development of audience profiles, stakeholder mapping and audience analysis;
- Identify appropriate communication channels and approaches for different audiences and stakeholder groups;
- Support the promotion and communication of AHDR events, activities, projects, resources and opportunities;
- Develop and maintain communication approaches that encourage participation, engagement and visibility of AHDR’s work;
- Support media engagement and responses to communications enquiries, in consultation with the AHDR Director where appropriate;
- Coordinate communications with project partners and external stakeholders where relevant;
- Contribute to strengthening AHDR’s visibility and public profile in Cyprus and internationally.
- Research, Monitoring, Evaluation and Further Development
- Monitor communications performance and relevant indicators, including website, social media and other available communication metrics;
- Prepare regular updates and reports for the AHDR Director on communications activities, performance, reach and engagement;
- Develop and monitor relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for AHDR’s communications work;
- Collect and analyse relevant audience feedback, engagement data and other information to assess the effectiveness of communications activities;
- Identify strengths, challenges and areas for improvement in AHDR’s communications approaches;
- Research and identify relevant communications practices, trends and approaches used by peer organisations and educational and civil society organisations locally and internationally;
- Provide recommendations on communications approaches, tools and practices that could be adapted to AHDR’s needs;
- Contribute to the continuous improvement and further development of AHDR’s communications strategy, systems, content and practices;
- Maintain organised records of communications materials, content, campaigns, publications, media contacts and relevant outputs.
- Contribution to AHDR’s Institutional and Operational Capacity
- Works under the supervision of the AHDR Director, reports to the Director and works for the benefit of the Association in a spirit of collegiality;
- Abides by the Terms of Reference and accompanying documents;
- Complies with AHDR Code of Conduct;
- Follows the AHDR’s Operational Manual and procedures;
- Follows and contributes to AHDR’s Calendar;
- Attends meetings and contributes to the exchange of ideas and overall progress of the Association;
- Seeks capacity-building opportunities that are in line with their roles and responsibilities in the Association.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in relevant disciplines with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience or
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant disciplines with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
Relevant fields may include Communications, Media, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Digital Media or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Competencies and Experience
- Demonstrated experience in communications, content development, social media and/or digital communications.
- Strong writing, editing and storytelling skills, with excellent attention to detail.
- Experience managing social media platforms and digital content, including content planning and analytics.
- Experience with visual content and basic graphic design; knowledge of tools such as Canva or equivalent is an advantage.
- Experience in website content management is an advantage.
- Strong organisational and project coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with different audiences and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of the political and social context of Cyprus.
- Fluency in Turkish and/or Greek.
- Fluency in written and spoken English.
- Knowledge of a language of other communities in Cyprus will be considered an advantage;
- Work experience in intercommunal NGOs or initiatives will be considered an advantage.
