EXPRESSION OF INTEREST (EOI)
Professional Services – Roster of Coaches / Physical Education Teachers
ASSOCIATION FOR HISTORICAL DIALOGUE AND RESEARCH (AHDR)
&
PEACEPLAYERS-CYPRUS (PP-CY)
Background of Organizations
The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) is a unique multi-communal, non-for-profit, non-governmental organization established in Nicosia in 2003 that envisions a society where dialogue on issues of history, historiography and history teaching and learning is considered a means for the advancement of historical understanding and critical thinking and is welcomed as an integral part of democracy and a culture of peace. The AHDR contributes to the advancement of historical understanding amongst the public and more specifically amongst children, youth, and educators by providing access to learning opportunities for individuals of every ability and every ethnic, religious, cultural, and social background, based on the respect for diversity and the dialogue of ideas. Since its establishment, the AHDR has broadened its mission by promoting peace education in formal and non-formal settings and is currently bringing together school children of all ages from all communities on the island under ‘Imagine’ project; in this context, the AHDR has received acclaim from the UN Secretary General for its role in promoting contact and cooperation between the future generations of Cyprus.
‘Imagine’ project, is an Educational Program on Anti-racism Education/ Education for a Culture of Peace launched in October 2017, which aims to increase contact between the two communities in Cyprus and promotes peace, understanding and anti-racism on the island in the context of a holistic understanding of a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence. The program also aims to decentralize and reach rural areas in the island which have fewer opportunities to engage in activities that bring members of the two communities together. Participation to the project is completely voluntary and free-of-charge. The project is based on a step-by-step approach, and the methodology employed in the workshops is adapted to different age groups and educational levels.
As of June 2022, 6117 students, accompanied by 714 teachers were trained in the Imagine Project. Another 518 teachers were trained in Peace Education both mono-communally and bi-communally and another 92 head teachers participated in the ‘Imagine’ Head Teachers conference.
The ‘Imagine’ Project is implemented by the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) and the Home for Cooperation (H4C) and is funded by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. It is supported by the Technical Committee on Education and the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the UN Office of the Special Advisor (OASG).
In the context of ‘Imagine’ project, the AHDR has been partnered with the PeacePlayers-Cyprus (PP-CY), which has been effectively working on strengthening the dialogue and relationship of children from the divided communities within the framework of peacebuilding through basketball, under the ethos of “children who play together can learn to live together”. Since the organization’s inception in 2006, PP-CY has reached over 4,000 youth across the island from both communities; and continues to engage with them through structured sport for dialogue and reconciliation efforts. PP-CY is part of a larger PeacePlayers global network that includes programs in conflict and post conflict communities including the Middle East, Northern Ireland, South Africa and the United States. Through this network, PP-CY has been able to strengthen its position within Cyprus and remains the only intercommunal peacebuilding through sport organization within the island.
To support the ‘Imagine’ project, the two organizations require professional services for the sports activities of the project.
