This seminar is organised to celebrate the publication of the Iconoclastic Controversies book, which contains a visual analysis of how memorials in the south of the island strengthen images of the enemy, but in some cases try to open-up alternative ways of thinking. More than a mere (re-) presentation of the book’s content, the seminar provides a platform to several speakers to reflect about the relationship between power and memory. It raises questions about how to remember, and what to remember, but also how to create alternative and more respectful ways of remembering. Moreover, the seminar addresses how particular recollections of the past exercise power over the present, and how the present attempts to structure the ways we think about the past.

Iconoclastic controversies: A photographic inquiry into antagonistic nationalism

The book combines photography and written text to analyse the role of memorials and commemoration sites in the construction of antagonistic nationalism. Taking Cypriot memorializations as a case study, the book shows how these memorials often support, but sometimes also undermine, the discursive-material assemblage of nationalism.
About the author
Nico Carpentier is Extraordinary Professor at Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic) and President of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (2020-2023). He also holds a part-time position at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB – Free University of Brussels, Belgium), as Associate Professor. Moreover, he is a Research Fellow at Loughborough University. His latest monographs are The Discursive-Material Knot: Cyprus in Conflict and Community Media Participation (2017, Peter Lang, New York) and Iconoclastic Controversies: A Photographic Inquiry into Antagonistic Nationalism (2021, Intellect, Bristol).
