Background

The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) is an inter-communal, non-profit, and non-governmental organization established in 2003 in Nicosia, Cyprus. The AHDR envisions to contribute to the advancement of dialogue, critical thinking and intercultural understanding amongst teachers, students, and the general public by providing access to various learning opportunities for all. More specifically, the AHDR promotes the study and research of the History of Cyprus in a critical and comprehensive way; develops supplementary educational material for educators and students in relation to History and Peace/ Anti-racist Education to be shared and used in and beyond classrooms; increases public awareness on the importance of dialogue and multiperspectivity; promotes a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence through education at a local, national, and international level. In 2011 the AHDR opened the Home for Cooperation (H4C), a unique educational, cultural and community centre in the heart of Nicosia, in the UN Buffer Zone.

To support its work, the AHDR requires professional services to help support the current and future project needs of the AHDR.

Expression of Interest & Roster of Teacher Trainers

The overall objective of this expression of interest is to create a roster of teacher trainers for the AHDR’s projects. Qualified trainers will be placed in the roster for the next one year in order to expedite the hiring process. Under the understanding for registering for the teacher trainers roster the selected candidates will be contacted to see if they are available to facilitate workshops for teachers when needed. The trainings aim to help increase contact and cooperation between teachers across the divide and develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes on either Education for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence or History Education.

The workshops take place mono-communally in all districts in the language of the community or bicommunally in the Buffer Zone in English, Greek and Turkish.

The Roster will be maintained for a period of one year and will be reviewed and updated yearly based on performance and needs.

The applicant may look into all areas of expertise indicated below and then choose their relevant field as appropriate to submit the application. Individuals may apply for more than one area if they have the required qualifications and professional skills.

History and History Education

Background to AHDR’s work on History and History Education: The mission of the AHDR is to defend and promote productive dialogue and research into history and history teaching and, thereby, in strengthening peace, stability and democracy. In this manner, multiperspectivity and critical thinking form the two main components of AHDR’s work. Hence, the AHDR focuses its work on Research and Training in the field of History. Since its formation, the organization’s efforts have centred on providing opportunities for educators, historians, and researchers to become better equipped to handle the complexities of history teaching, including the training of educators and the development of supplementary educational materials. In this context, our history and history education activities focus on, to name a few:

1. Bi-communal and mono-communal teacher training workshops related to History of Cyprus, Social and Cultural History, History Teaching Methodology and AHDR Supplementary Educational Materials (more specifically on gender, monuments, public space; language, identity, and multilingualism in Cyprus; social and emotional learning)
2. Design and Implementation of research and dissemination of research findings
3. Conferences
4. Panel Discussions on policy development and public debates and film screenings on history
5. Exhibitions related to Cyprus History
6. Creation of Public Outreach Tools
7. Organisation of city walks and bike rides

Peace Education/ Education for a Culture of Peace:

Background to AHDR’s work on Peace Education/ Education for a Culture of Peace: In the context of AHDR’s efforts to promote a Culture of Peace through education, at a local, national and international level, the organization has also engaged in a series of Peace Education projects and activities. These have showcased the impact of deconstructing stereotypes and increasing contact in creating a paradigm shift in education as a prerequisite for laying the foundations for sustainable peace. The implementation of Peace Education projects derives from the recognition, by the AHDR, of the necessity to respond to the educational needs of teachers, students and the society at large in relation to Education for a Culture of Peace as well as to the urgency to highlight the importance of peace and non-violence and increased inter-communal contact for constructing alternative futures for the generations to come. All the above prescribe the implementation of innovative programs and initiatives. It is an imperative for the AHDR to assist educational stakeholders, mainly students and teachers, in redefining the use of terms such as social justice, compassion, solidarity, peace and conflict and deconstruct the ‘friend-enemy’ logic. In this framework, our work on Peace Education focuses on:

1. Trainings for students and teachers on issues related to a Culture of Peace
2. Design of sustainability actions
3. Organization of local and international conferences, seminars and public debates on education
4. Implementation of youth camps
5. Implementation of youth and children clubs
6. Design and publication of training manuals on Peace Education
7. Networking with local and international stakeholders in education

Scope of Work and Responsibilities

The trainer will ensure effective and efficient provision of services, full confidentiality in all aspects of assignment, management of information flow and follow-up on deadlines and commitments made. Below are the key responsibilities:

• Delivering workshops for teachers
• Developing lesson plans or training courses, where applicable
• Scheduling and attending preparatory meetings with the workshop co-facilitators and the AHDR team
• Participating in trainings of trainers
• Helping with the setting up the workshop room with the co-facilitator if needed
• Working in line with the vision, mission and objectives of the AHDR and the guidelines provided by the AHDR team

Required Qualifications & Competences

• Bachelors or Above in relevant field
• Minimum 3 years of experience in relevant field
• Demonstrated substantive and technical expertise in relevant field (i.e. History and History Education/ Peace Education)
• Demonstrated experience in training/teaching in formal and/or non-formal education
• Excellent knowledge of the Cyprus political situation and its challenges
• Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work as part of a team
• Fluency is required in written and spoken English
• Native speaker of Greek or Turkish
