 Background

The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) is an inter-communal, non-profit, and non-governmental organization established in 2003 in Nicosia, Cyprus. The AHDR envisions to contribute to the advancement of dialogue, critical thinking and intercultural understanding amongst teachers, students, and the general public by providing access to various learning opportunities for all. More specifically, the AHDR promotes the study and research of the History of Cyprus in a critical and comprehensive way; develops supplementary educational material for educators and students in relation to History and Peace/ Anti-racist Education to be shared and used in and beyond classrooms; increases public awareness on the importance of dialogue and multiperspectivity; promotes a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence through education at a local, national, and international level. In 2011 the AHDR opened the Home for Cooperation (H4C), a unique educational, cultural and community centre in the heart of Nicosia, in the UN Buffer Zone.

The ‘Let’s Walk…!’ Study Visits Programme

As part of its commitment to delivering history education in non-formal settings, the AHDR has launched a study visits programme titled ‘Let’s Walk…!’. The programme draws on methods from experiential learning, place-based and outdoor education to provide participants with the opportunity to explore significant sites located across Cyprus and to gain a deeper understanding of the history, geography, environment, and culture of the island in an engaging way. Participants gain direct, in-person experience of each location, work collaboratively, and engage in critical dialogue on a range of topics including identity, heritage, inequality, conflict, migration, and environmental sustainability.

The programme draws extensively on the AHDR’s two-volume manual for educators ‘Cyprus, a Classroom Without Walls: A Teacher’s Guide to Engaging with Significant Sites,’ which includes a fieldwork toolkit for facilitating educational visits around Cyprus.

Expression of Interest & Roster of Outdoor Educators

The overall objective of this call is to create a roster of outdoor educators for the ‘Let’s Walk…!’ programme. Selected applicants will be placed in the roster in order to expedite the hiring process. Under the understanding for registering for the outdoor educators roster the selected candidates will be contacted to see if they are available to facilitate study visits when needed.

The Roster will be maintained for a period of one year and will be reviewed and updated yearly based on performance and needs.

Scope of Work and Responsibilities

Programme Facilitators and Outdoor Educators are responsible for planning and leading study visits with teenagers and adults in a mixed indoor/outdoor setting, as well as creating an open and productive environment for dialogue and collaboration in which participants can engage with complex topics.

Key duties include:

• Work with the History Education Officer to develop educational material in preparation for study visits.
• Coordinate with co- facilitators and local stakeholders to effectively implement study visits in Cyprus across the divide.
• Facilitate a meaningful group process and set an emotionally and physically safe, fun, and engaging tone.
• Attend workshops and training as required for professional development.

Our ideal candidate

We are looking for individuals who are enthusiastic about teaching and the outdoors, are motivated to learn and be creative, and have an active interest in the history/geography of Cyprus. Facilitators must be committed to inspire critical thinking and create a space for dialogue and collaboration outside the classroom.

Minimum requirements

• Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Education, Humanities, Social Sciences, Environmental Science, or related fields; or currently working towards a degree in these fields.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Self-motivated, ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Proficiency in Greek or Turkish, and English.
• Plans to be regularly present in Cyprus over the next year.
• Ability to cross checkpoints.

Preferred

• Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in outdoor education or previous experience leading outdoor education or related programmes.
• Demonstrated experience in formal/non-formal education and/or adult education.
• Demonstrated experience in educational material design and/or assessment.
• Good command of another language commonly spoken in Cyprus.
