Project Title: European Direct Information Centre
Funded by: European Commission
Programme Period: February 2015 - February 2017
EDIC Nicosia is a two-year initiative supported by the EC Representation in Cyprus and administered by the AHDR as of February 2015, culminating in the establishment of a local information center at the Home for Cooperation.
The mission of EDIC, in accordance with that of the Europe Direct Information Centres network is to inform European citizens about the EU, in particular about the rights of EU citizens and the EU’s priorities (notably the Europe 2020 Growth Strategy). The Centre will aim to promote participatory citizenship at a local and regional level and provide information on EU legislation and how this is being implemented in Cyprus. Information on the various EU programmes, grants and funding opportunities available to individuals and organisations in Cyprus will also be provided so as to increase opportunities for employment and education for citizens.
Within the framework of its operation, EDIC will organise a series of activities centered on issues such as education, trade and culture.
Europe Direct Nicosia was very busy in 2015 with information sessions on funding opportunities and the Green Line Regulation, Saturday morning Kids Clubs, a Study in Europe Educational Fair, cycling tours, and an open-air summer Film Festival.
2016 is set to be another eventful year, during which the Centre will utilize its location in the Buffer Zone and focus on promoting the EU’s efforts to support the political, social and economic reunification of Cyprus. As such, a series of information sessions and debates about the Peace Process and the ongoing negotiations will be organised, which will aim to foster dialogue between citizens across the divide on a local level and individuals involved in the decision making process.
Similarly, EDIC has organised walking tours around the Old Town of Nicosia, seeking to highlight sites of common heritage in the city, which have been financially supported or protected by the European Union, as part of its efforts to enhance apolitical cooperation amongst all communities in Cyprus. These tours are being organized not only to introduce local citizens to the historically rich and multicultural nature of the city, but also to promote sustainable mobility and the well-being of all.
Kids Clubs will continue, aiming to introduce young learners to the basic concepts and values of the Union, while European Film Nights, through screenings and panel discussions on key issues of current EU policy, will provide citizens from all walks of life with a platform to engage in thought and dialogue, supporting civic participation.
We will also continue to reach out the public at broader events such as Europe Day, Mobility Week celebrations and other civil society festivals.
Europe Direct Nicosia will continue to be open 20 hours a week, providing free, user-friendly information on the EU’s programmes and priorities.
