Standard versus dialect phrasebook project.

The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) warmly invites qualified applied linguists, researchers and material developers to express their interest in participating in a team that will develop a Standard Greek – Standard Turkish – Cypriot Turkish – Cypriot Greek phrasebook.

The purpose of this initiative is to develop a phrasebook that will provide common phrases that might be useful in daily communication. The phrases will be provided in the standard variety of the language and in the dialect spoken in Cyprus. The idea is to offer opportunities to teach and learn the dominant languages in Cyprus, thus raising the opportunities for communication between individuals belonging to different communities. The development of the phrasebook will address a complete gap identified in the availability of teaching materials for learning and teaching of the languages of the communities in Cyprus. Upon completion of the work on the content of the phrasebook, in addition to hard-copy, a digital version will be developed to utilise the printed material to its greater potential to aid learning through the use of the contemporary technological advancements. The digital version will include a website as well as smart phone applications for Android and iOS operating systems.

The development of the phrasebook is an HCNM project, which will be implemented by the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR), for a period of 8 months. It is expected that the selection of material for inclusion into the phrasebook will require:

a.       Two experts in the Greek and Turkish language; to cover both the standard and dialect variety of the given languages.

b.      A Materials Developer who has previous experience in developing sequential teaching and learning materials to ensure smooth transition of units based on previously acquired language items and activities.
