AHDR Learning Visits

Representatives of the multi-communal Association for Historical Dialogue and Research have also accepted invitations to present, train and share their expertise with colleagues and interested parties in many educational events in Cyprus and abroad, for example:

  • "Oral History Project", July 2011, USA:

In July 2011, AHDR Press Officer, Rena Choplarou and former AHDR Secretary, Fezile Isik, were fortunate enough to join a small team of teachers from Cleveland, Ohio in a pilot project of oral history with the aim of collecting the oral history of two black congregations in the Charleston area.  Professors Peter Rutkoff and Will Scott of Kenyon College in Ohio had been successful in persuading two small black rural churches in the Gullah portions of the Low Country to open their congregations to a new oral history project. The Gullah population and their culture originates from West Africa and was brought to the USA during the slave period.  Fezile & Rena joined a small team of Cleveland, Ohio teachers, who have participated in previous Gullah history and culture Kenyon-led programs, and worked as scholars doing oral history field work for a week in each of the two black church communities.  With a video camera and pen and paper, Rena and Fezile joined colleagues in interviewing members of the Gullah community and were told interesting stories of their lives in the USA, as well as their history and the origins of their culture.
